The York Knights are set to make a bold statement in the newly expanded Super League, aiming to dethrone the reigning champions, Hull KR, in their debut season. But here's where it gets controversial: despite the team's sudden rise from part-time to full-time status in just a few months, they are entering the season with low expectations from outsiders.
The Knights' journey to the top flight was a whirlwind, with the team only finding out about their promotion in October. This meant a rapid transformation from a part-time setup to a full-time, professional operation. However, the team's coach, Harris, is determined to ignore the outside noise and focus on their own goals.
"It's for other people to either write us off or back us," he said. "That is their opinion and, with all due respect, we won't listen to good or bad. All we care about is our opinion of ourselves and our coaches' opinions of us. So we will keep the outside noise outside and focus on what we need as a group."
The Knights' coach, Mark Applegarth, who joined the club in June 2024, is relishing the challenge of competing against established Super League coaches, including Hull KR's Willie Peters, Warrington's Sam Burgess, Matt Peet of Wigan, and Leigh's Adrian Lam.
"That is what is exciting and what drives you," Applegarth said. "If you didn't feel that you belong you are probably not in the right job. I feel like I belong there and I can do some damage there as a coach. That is the beauty of life that you dare to dream and I firmly believe that I belong there. I have that burning desire to improve and I really can't wait."
The York Knights are ready to make their mark in the Super League, but will they be able to overcome the low expectations and prove the doubters wrong? Only time will tell. And this is the part most people miss: the team's rapid rise and transformation could be a blueprint for other clubs looking to make a similar leap. So, what do you think?
