Still Not Impressed by the New Amadeus (2025) (2026)

The world of entertainment has a peculiar habit of revisiting old ideas, and the latest example is the 2025 miniseries adaptation of Amadeus, which left me feeling rather underwhelmed. It's a trend that seems to be on an endless loop, with Hollywood and other industries recycling intellectual properties instead of fostering fresh creativity.

This particular adaptation, based on Peter Shaffer's 1979 play, is a prime example of this trend. While the original play and the 1984 movie had their merits, this miniseries feels like a missed opportunity.

One of the key aspects that could have elevated this production was the exploration of Mozart's complex character. The miniseries had the potential to delve into his mental state, the trauma of his childhood, and the impact of being a prodigy under immense pressure. However, this was not executed effectively, leaving the audience with a one-dimensional portrayal of an arrogant genius.

What makes this particularly fascinating is the contrast between the lead actors. Will Sharpe, who plays Mozart, struggles to bring depth to his character, while Paul Bettany as Salieri absolutely shines. Bettany's performance is a masterclass in carrying a show, and it's a pity that the series is named after the character he doesn't portray.

In my opinion, the costumes, designed by Lisa Duncan, are a mixed bag. While the men's suits, especially Salieri's, are impressive and true to the period, the women's wear falls short. There's a noticeable lack of attention to detail, with recycled dresses and hairstyles that don't quite fit the era.

One aspect that stood out to me was the use of a modern dress as inspiration for Constanze's wedding gown. This choice feels like a strange departure from historical accuracy and more akin to fantasy.

Despite these criticisms, there are some redeeming qualities. Rory Kinnear's portrayal of Emperor Joseph adds a layer of historical context, a welcome change from the movie's comedic take on the character.

So, will I be tuning in to this Amadeus? Probably not, unless I find myself in a similar situation as the writer, stuck on a long flight with nothing else to do. It's a production that feels more like a missed opportunity than a must-watch series.

This trend of recycling old ideas is a concern, as it limits the potential for truly innovative and captivating storytelling. It's a reminder that we, as an audience, deserve more than just a rehash of what's already been done.
