In a shocking incident that has captured public attention, Atlanta Falcons rookie James Pearce Jr. is allegedly involved in a dangerous series of events where he reportedly crashed his SUV into the car of WNBA player Rickea Jackson multiple times and even struck a police officer while trying to evade arrest. This information comes from a criminal complaint obtained by ESPN from the Miami-Dade County state attorney's office, revealing serious allegations against Pearce.
On Saturday, Pearce was arrested in Florida and faces a total of five felony charges, which include aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, aggravated stalking, and aggravated battery against a law enforcement officer. He was released from the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center late Sunday night after posting a bond set at $20,500.
Rickea Jackson, who currently plays for the Los Angeles Sparks, reported to the police that she noticed Pearce following her in a white Lamborghini SUV on Saturday morning. When she stopped at a red traffic light, he exited his vehicle and attempted to open her driver's side door. Fearing for her safety, Jackson quickly accelerated away, heading towards the Doral Police Department. Pearce, undeterred, got back into his SUV and continued to pursue her.
As Jackson approached the area near the police station, she observed Pearce intentionally ram into the rear of her vehicle. In a dramatic turn of events, when she tried to back away, Pearce allegedly cut her off and collided with her car head-on. The police affidavit noted that photographs taken of Jackson's vehicle corroborated her account of the damage sustained during these encounters.
After Jackson called for help, Doral police officers arrived at the scene and found Pearce outside his SUV with the door ajar. When an officer aimed his weapon at Pearce and commanded him to lie down, Pearce instead re-entered his vehicle, locked the door, and attempted to escape. During this chaotic moment, his SUV struck one of the officers in the knee, which the affidavit described as an intentional act to avoid being apprehended.
A high-speed chase ensued, with police following Pearce until he ultimately crashed at an intersection. Once out of his vehicle, he fled on foot but was soon caught by officers, although he resisted arrest by tensing up and making it difficult for them to apprehend him.
Subsequently, Pearce received medical attention at Jackson West Medical Center after being triaged on the scene. He remained in custody at the correctional facility through Saturday night and into Sunday.
The charges Pearce is facing include two counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, one count of aggravated stalking, and additional felonies for fleeing from police and assaulting an officer. There is also a misdemeanor charge for resisting an officer without violence.
Interestingly, Jackson revealed to the police that she and Pearce had been in a relationship for about three years before recently breaking up. She had blocked his number to prevent further communication, but Pearce allegedly used different phone numbers to reach out to her. One message sent on Friday afternoon made it clear that Jackson wanted Pearce to stop contacting her, stating she wanted nothing to do with him. Despite her requests, Pearce continued to send messages through the night into Saturday morning, which Jackson shared with police during their investigation.
In response to these events, the Falcons issued a statement late Saturday, indicating they were in the process of gathering more information regarding the situation.
It’s worth noting that Pearce had just finished third in the AP NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year voting at the NFL Honors ceremony on Thursday. He had also set a new record for the Falcons as a rookie, leading the team with 10½ sacks during the 2025 season.
