Convicted Jan. 6 Rioter Attends Pentagon War Briefing: What's Going On? (2026)

A convicted January 6th rioter was granted access to a high-level Pentagon war briefing, raising serious questions about security and journalistic integrity. This event, involving a participant in the Capitol riot, has ignited a firestorm of controversy. But here's where it gets truly astonishing: the individual was not just present, but was among a select group of 'journalists' chosen by Pete Hegseth to attend a tense briefing by the Defense Secretary regarding the Iran conflict.

Let's rewind to January 2021. During the tumultuous storming of the Capitol, Brandon Straka was actively involved, shouting encouragement like "go, go, go" as the mob surged towards the building. He even urged a fellow rioter to grab a police officer's shield, emphatically yelling "take it, take it." In a private chat group for the "Stop the Steal" movement, Straka expressed his exhilaration amidst the chaos, messaging: "F--k no!! I’m at the Capitol and just joined the breach!!! I just got gassed! Never felt so f-----g alive in my life!!!"

Straka eventually pleaded guilty in October 2021 to a misdemeanor charge of disorderly and disruptive conduct on Capitol grounds. He was sentenced in January 2022 by Judge Dabney L. Friedrich to a period of three years of probation, three months of home detention, a $5,000 fine, and $500 in restitution. Remarkably, former President Donald Trump later issued a full pardon on January 21, 2025.

Since then, Straka has actively promoted his association with Trump to further his career as a self-proclaimed "media personality." He proudly shared that he had a "front row seat" at the Pentagon briefing on Monday. To prove his attendance, he posted a photo on X (formerly Twitter) of himself in the Pentagon briefing room, sporting a prominent red "PRESS" lanyard. He announced his participation in the Defense Department's briefing concerning U.S. military actions against Iran.

And this is the part most people miss: Straka was part of a carefully curated group of pro-Trump media figures who now comprise the Pentagon's new press corps. This development occurred after a significant portion of the mainstream press walked out in protest last October, refusing to agree to a restrictive Pentagon "gag order." Media outlets that did sign the policy and maintain their access include One America News, The Federalist, and The Epoch Times. The new pool, which includes organizations that joined after major outlets like Fox News, The New York Times, and Reuters declined, features names such as The Gateway Pundit, The Post Millennial, Turning Point USA’s Frontlines, and the Daily Signal. Even Lindell TV, founded by MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell, and conservative streamer Tim Pool (Timcast) were in attendance.

Despite the briefing on "Operation Epic Fury" on Monday being filled with what some might call sympathetic attendees, it was far from smooth. Pete Hegseth, the organizer, was observed dressing down his own selected reporters multiple times. At one point, he declared, "Going forward, why would we tell you—you, the enemy, anybody—what we will or will not do?" When NBC News' Courtney Kube managed to ask a question about the potential length of the Iran campaign, Hegseth dismissively labeled it as "a typical NBC sort of, gotcha type question."

In a statement to The Daily Beast, Straka refuted the court's findings, asserting that he "signed a false plea admission because our DOJ told me that to avoid a trial on bogus stacked charges I had to ‘confess’ to something I didn’t do." The Department of Defense (DoD) has declined to comment on the matter.

This situation raises a critical question: Is it appropriate for individuals with a history of participating in events that threatened national security to be privy to sensitive military briefings? What are your thoughts on the Pentagon's new press pool and the selection of its members? Share your opinions in the comments below – we'd love to hear if you agree or disagree!
