Fuel Price Shock in Brisbane: Unfair Hikes Spark Action!
The RACQ, Queensland's leading motoring organization, has taken a stand against what they believe is unjustified price gouging by petrol retailers in Brisbane. The RACQ's Response: In a bold move, the RACQ has referred these retailers to the ACCC, Australia's consumer watchdog, for potential unconscionable conduct. Dr. Jeffreys noted that similar price hikes were observed on the Gold Coast, indicating a broader issue.
Despite the alarming price surge, Dr. Jeffreys reassured consumers that fuel supply in Brisbane is stable. He dismissed rumors of prices reaching $3 per litre, emphasizing that such an increase would only be possible through unfair pricing practices. The fuel companies, he added, have consistently demonstrated their ability to maintain supply, and there have been no significant constraints in the Brisbane market for many years.
Interestingly, the oil market remained relatively stable during the initial days of the war in Iran. The RACQ expects fuel companies to manage any margin increases without passing the burden to consumers. When markets opened on Monday, oil prices surged by over 10%, later settling at a 5% increase by day's end. Each $10 rise in a barrel of oil could translate to a 10¢ increase per litre at Australian pumps, economists warn.
A National Concern: Dr. Jeffreys indicated that similar pricing issues were observed in NSW, while the Perth market, regulated by the state government, remained unaffected. He recalled the RACQ's previous call for the Queensland government to regulate price increases, limiting daily hikes to 5 cents, a move that could have prevented the current situation.
